Happy Christmas

Strand, London

The last twelve months have been a momentous year. Next year will likely see little rest until the house is done and we are settled within – and that may devour most of the year.

Happy Christmas! We hope you are enjoying the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Canterbury

Moss growing on an old pub in Canterbury.

We spent a few pleasant days in Canterbury before Christmas last year. An historic town in the south-east of the United Kingdom.

The daylight hours we had were short. It was deep winter and the sun was setting around three in the afternoon. Something of a surprise arriving directly from a fairly sunny central France.

Cathedral by Day and Night

The cathedral was not our main destination in the city. We have seen plenty of cathedrals and the price made it difficult to justify another.

Of course, that did not stop us walking around the grounds and taking photos by both day and night.

Canterbury Castle

A ruined Norman era castle sits in a park within Canterbury. Visitors are free to wander in and around. There is a flight of spiral stairs to climb to reach a small look-out.

The town itself is full of old and not so old buildings. The small details of the buildings stood out to me; moss reclaiming a roof and use of sharp dark rock to cover the buildings.

The medieval walls surrounding Canterbury can be walked along. A good starting point is near the bus stop and the views are enjoyable. Modern life has placed a ring road around the walls, which takes away from the external views. Life goes on and such developments keep the city alive.

Christmas Lights in Lyon

There is not a lot that can be said about Christmas lights and decorations around the city. They are welcome during the short days of December and they justify walking around the city camera in hand.

I filmed more than I photographed this year. The resulting short film of the Christmas Lights in Lyon is now available on my YouTube channel and embedded below.

Once again editing this short highlighted how much I have to learn about filming and editing. I need to film with a narrative in mind. Photography rewards capturing a single moment; filming needs context and a story to weave the scenes together. It is going to be a long road to any sense of mastery.

Christmas Decorations Around Sydney

Happy Christmas banners adorn the city of Sydney

Decorations started appearing around the city of Sydney in November. As we sped from one event to another around the city, it was difficult to resist stopping and taking the odd photo.

Christmas Decorations Around Melbourne

Over the last weeks Christmas decorations have been appearing around the city. The city is rolling out new decorations in many parts of the city centre. There appears to be a trend towards a nature based theme using living pine trees, with a move away from large metal structures of previous years.

This is the last year we expect to see Christmas in the city, so my camera has been kept busy capturing memories.

The department store, Myer, unveiled its series of Christmas windows. The windows draw large crowds and demand staff to help guide families along. Inside the newly renovated building a Santa themed train ride is operating.
